Mobius Camera Review

Recording great scenery from your RC model, weather you are soaring high above or skimming the tree tops, is one of the things all RC enthusiast love. Mobius Camera moves it one step up with great video quality, excellent form factor and weight and all that at the great price. Do we have a winner here?

So far GoPro was the mainstream option for excellent video footage, with wide FOV (field of view) which is one of the main prerequisites for great RC video. There are several other camcorders in the same class but most of these have something in common: they are not made to be strapped on an flying object.

GoPro action camera is making excellent footage but there are several major drawbacks:

  • Aerodynamic properties of a brick
  • Too heavy and bulky requiring strong and heavy supporting equipment if you want to pan and tilt, which requires bigger models and higher battery drain,
  • And finally price which is not negligible

One of the camcorders that is very popular in the RC community so far was the descendant of 808 car key micro "spy" cameras, particularly model #16. Camera is very light, around 17 grams, small size 50mm (L) x 32mm (W) x13mm (H), with built-in 250mAh LiPo battery and video recording in 1280 x 720 at 30fps.  Earlier version had narrower field of view which is fixed with recent versions (such as V2) with up to 120 degrees of FOV.

808 #16 keychain camcorder although making decent footage, having excellent form-factor for RC and great direct RC community support from manufacturer still couldn't compete with bigger brothers such as GoPro, Sony HDR-AS10 and HDR-AS15, Contour Action Cams or CamOne Infinity in terms of video quality.

On the basis of very successful 808 #16 car key camera recently emerged its a bit bigger brother Mobius Camera Action cam. It grow in size but still kept all of the benefits of its older brother and all that with the price at around $70 much lower than a GoPro.

Software and functionalists, most of which are added to suit RC community needs, are the same as with the 808 #16. There is PC GUI tool for configuration of the camcorder and can be found here together with detailed manual.

Some basic specifications:

Mobius ActionCam Camcorder is very light and recording footage near the GoPro White/Silver quality. As additional equipment you can get various types of mounting attachments as well as 8" (20cm) lens extension cable.

Later is particulary interesting for FPV usage as lens, which is significantly smaller can be mounted separately on pan and tilt mount while the rest of the camcorder can be safely tucked inside the models fuselage. It also helps with drag reduction.
