Between watching basketball games tonight I decided to try importing some ribs into the Profili 2.2 airfoil program.

First I vectorized the root and tip templates from the MAN plans using Wintopo. Then I traced these .DXF files in CAD to clean up the contours. I only traced one surface and then mirrored it using a center line to get perfect symmetry. I then exported the airfoils as .GIF files. Profili 2.2 lets you open a raster file and import it into its airfoil library.

Now I can generate entire sets of Mach 1 rib patterns complete with spar notches, building tabs, etc., and print them out on my inkjet printer. Profili will automatically transition from the root to tip airfoils.

If you have Profili, simply open these .GIF files under "Import" in the Airfoil Management window. Profili will convert them to the proper format and add them to its airfoil library.

Then use the "Interpolated Wing Ribs" feature to add sheeting, LE, TE and spars and print your ribs. You will need to measure the root and tip chords off the plans and decide how many ribs you want in each panel. (I measured a root chord of 14.75" and a tip chord of 8.5" with a 1/2" LE)

I know that probably every Mach 1 ever built has used foam wings, but this at least gives you the option to make a built-up wing. The third image shows my desktop with the rib patterns.

Obviously, this can be done for any set of plans that only shows the foam templates.

Here are the .GIF airfoils that you can use. The root is the slightly thicker one on the left:

Profili, like other airfoil programs, lets you overlay and compare different airfoils. I thought it was interesting to see the differences between the NACA 0014 and the Mach 1 airfoil. They are similar, but, the Mach 1 airfoil is a bit more pointed near the LE and has its max thickness a bit further back.

Hi dave:

Question: is this last image in your post, the center rib for the mach1? if I click on it, it should be full size ready to print and make templates out of it? if so, how about posting the last rib so I can cut the wings for my mach1.

txs for your help, good job.

Regards.
Rafa

David,

Can you generate for me a NACA 0013 Root Rib And either a NACA 0015-16 Tip rib. Just use the Chord lenght of the Mach 1 Please.

Please throw a Towel over your Monitor when you read this as I'm developing the "BBB"(Boling Ballistic Bullet) and I don't want MHESTER, gcourtney, or Sparky to see it!

Thanks for the help.

Dave,

Any chance you would e-mail the templates to me also?

I went ahead and made a laser cut file for the Mach 1 ribs complete with break tabs. The ribs will only need four sheets of 3/32" x 4" x 24" balsa to do, so it will be a cheap job (assuming your laser cutter has fair pricing). I'm guessing around $8 to $10 per set, maybe less. PM me your email address if you want the file.

Rainedave. I was doing a similar comparison with NACA 0018 airfoils, actually comparing them with the one Joe Bridi used in the RCM Advanced Trainer.

I noticed that there is another 0018, which is listed as 0018T in Profili, that seems a little more pointed at the LE, and seems to have the max thickness a little back also.

I was looking for this "T" menaning in NACA profiles in Google, with no luck. I even contacted Stefano Duranti, Profili's creator, and he did not know what was I talking about.

Looking at your observations, I thought that maybe the pattern designers used to modify the regular NACA symetrical profiles somehow in order to build it easier, or probably because more aerodynamic-based reasons.

Did you try to compare it with the "T" series in Profili?

Thanks and regards

Thanks, martinoto, I'll take a look at that airfoil. For the Mach 1 ribs I traced the airfoil on the plans in cad so it's as close as I could get it (but far from perfect).
