So, I have a Duratrax Pirahna Peak Charger, and the instructions tell me to set the current setting for how much current the battery gets during peak charge... I can go from 100 mA to 5000 mA... Right now i have it on auto, and every minute it rechecks the current charge. This makes charging really slow, like 1.5 hours to charge, so i want to take it out of auto. What current setting should i set it at? I'm charging an SMC IB 3800 battery.
Thanks.

You can charge at 5000mA for that battery no problem.

Really?
Does it matter what current charge i charge it at? Will it lengthen or shorten the life of my battery?

Charge rate will affect your battery life but for a high quality battery like that 5 amps is no problem. If you want to be nice to it you should charge it at 380mA for 14 hours and then discharge it to .9v/cell once every month or so.

If it's pluged in to 110 the max amps it can run at is 3 amps. Charging at 1c for 3800 mah @ 3.8 amps is 1 hour.... So I would say that it's charging right at what it should be on auto., Now that being said, if you either have a 30 amp 12 volt power supply or a car batter that you can draw power from. you can bump up the current to 5 amps and cut your charge times down to about 30-45 min.

3 or 5 amps? I'm getting confused here.
I suppose i'll leave it on auto. The Piranha can't discharge, can it? Can i just run it dry in my car?

3 amps max on ac power. And 5 amps on dc power. you could set it to 5 amps in the profile for the 3800 mah battteries, and it would still only charge at 3 amps. if plugged into the 110 house current. but if you hooked the charger up to a 12 volt dc power sorce it would charge at 5 amps. I have the same charger, and thats how I have it set up. and this is what it does. I have one 1500 mah NiCd batt., one 3800 NiMh, and one 4200 NiMh. I charge the 1500 at 3a. and it takes about 30 min. to charge. on the 3800 and 4200, both set at 5a. if plugged into the house, they take about 1.5+ hours to charge. when hooked up to my car's battery they take about 40-45 min. to charge.

Oh, ok, thanks man. IF it also take you that long to charge i'll probably just leave it on auto.
